Seit mehr als 20 Jahren ist die Kanadierin Merrill Beth Nisker, besser bekannt als Peaches, mit ihrer Mischung aus elektronischer Tanzmusik und einer sich Gender-Fragen widmenden Performance-Kunst ein internationaler Star. Filmemacherin Marie Losier kommt der Künstlerin in diesem intimen Dokumentar-Porträt ausgesprochen nahe: Es geht um energiegeladene Auftritte und das Älterwerden, um die enge Beziehung Merrills zu ihrer verstorbenen Schwester Suri, oder auch um die Mitwirkung Peaches’ an einer Monteverdi-Oper. Und nicht zuletzt klärt sich, welchen Vorteil es hat, wenn man früher Songs zur Unterhaltung von Kindergarten-Kids gesungen hat: »They are like punk audiences.« (Lars Penning, Viennale)
For 17 years, Marie Losier filmed the life and work of Merrill Beth Nisker, better known as artist, musician and queer feminist icon Peaches, captured with a Bolex 16 mm camera in Losier’s inimitable style: joyful, fragmented and emotional in a way that delivers a rush to body and soul. Losier seems to have found yet another subject who matches her own velocity, an artist who is always mutating, changing and experimenting with sound, texture, dance and objects, as well as her many friends. She makes albums, live performances and opera (à la Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht). We witness her beginnings at the YMCA, where she developed her own system of teaching children about music and imagination, and we see her now, close to her sixties, thinking about life, grief and the menopause, the transformations of the body and the ones in her songs.
