Herzstück des Dokumentarfilms »Life Is Bigger« (1995) von Peter Zach – dessen Filme »Gestern Mitte morgen« und »Sehnsucht Berlin« die Hauptstadt in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren als Magnet für Künstler:innen aus aller Welt porträtieren – sind Aufnahmen des letzten Konzerts der damals legendären Noise-Rock-Band KNOCHEN=GIRL im Roten Salon der Volksbühne. Frontmann von KNOCHEN=GIRL war Mario Mentrup, der über Disziplingrenzen hinweg Berlins Alternativkultur geprägt hat, als Musiker, Autor, Verleger, Schauspieler und Filmemacher.
Mentrup zog in den 1980ern aus Emden nach Berlin, wie auch sein häufiger künstlerischer Wegbegleiter Michel Freerix. Freerix studierte an der Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie und gab Mentrup die Hauptrolle in seinem Abschlussfilm »Chronik des Regens« (1991), der das Lebensgefühl dieser Zeit zwischen Aufbruch und Slackertum einfängt. Freerix und Mentrup waren Cineasten und Musik-Kognoscenti, unterstützen gegenseitig ihre Projekte. So ist Freerix in »Life Is Bigger« zu sehen, beim Plattenauflegen in einem Club in Berlin-Mitte.
Zu Ehren von Michel Freerix, der im Januar 2026 verstorben ist, zeigen wir die 2016 digitalisierte Fassung. Nach einem Screening des Films 2018 legte Freerix Platten im Foyer des Lichtblick-Kinos auf.
Als Vorfilme zeigen wir die Musikfilme der Band Mutter: »Die Erde wird der schönste Platz im All« und »Roll Back« von Frank Behnke, in denen auch Michel Freerix auftritt.
At the heart of the documentary Life Is Bigger (1995) by Peter Zach – whose films “Gestern Mitte Morgen” and “City of Desire” portray 1980s and 1990s Berlin as a magnet for artists from all over the world – features footage from the final concert of the then-legendary noise-rock band KNOCHEN=GIRL at the Roter Salon of the Volksbühne. The frontman of KNOCHEN=GIRL was Mario Mentrup, who shaped Berlin’s alternative culture across disciplinary boundaries as a musician, author, publisher, actor, and filmmaker.
Mentrup moved from Emden to Berlin in the 1980s, as did his frequent artistic collaborator Michel Freerix. Freerix studied at the German Film and Television Academy and cast Mentrup in the lead role of his graduation film Chronik des Regens (1991), which captures the spirit of that era, caught between a sense of new beginnings and a laid-back, slacker attitude. Freerix and Mentrup were cineastes and music connoisseurs who supported each other’s projects. For example, Freerix can be seen in “Life Is Bigger”, DJing at a club in Berlin-Mitte.
In honor of Michel Freerix, who died in January 2026, we are showing the digitized version (2016). Following a screening of the film in 2018, Freerix spun records in the lobby of Lichtblick-Kino.
