Ask a Real Stripper

Anora (OmU)

followed by discussion with special guests of Slut Riot Berlin

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner Anora is an audacious, thrilling, and comedic variation on a modern day Cinderella story. It also raises many questions and sparks lively debates: do we truly know what we’re talking about?
Members of the initiative Slut Riot Berlin will join us after the screening for an in-depth conversation. Finally, the audience will have the unique opportunity to “Ask a Real Stripper”!

USA 2024, 139 min, director: Sean Baker, cast: Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan

Mikey Madison captivates as Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire. However, when Vanya’s parents catch wind of the union, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York.

Slut Riot wants to give sex workers a platform to speak, instead of being spoken about.

Born as a new chapter of the former Berlin Strippers Collective, Slut Riot is a group of Berlin-based sex workers who create performance art and shows. The mission they share is to take control over their own narratives and to find creative outlets to express their voices. The nature of their events is intrinsically political, aiming at destigmatising their professions through arts and performances. They are pioneers in their field and their mission is: to create opportunities for their community; to establish their own working conditions; to amplify sex workers‘ voices to fight stigma.

Existing as a sex worker comes with many challenges, such as: laws that leave a negative impact, exploitative working conditions, and stigma tainting their everyday lives. Slut Riot performances are self-organised and sex-worker lead, and they allow them to find elements of joy in their world and, on top of that, to establish their own rules in an industry where they don’t have much space to decide over their own working conditions.

Amongst others, Slut Riot have previously collaborated with Berliner Volksbühne, Radikal Jung Festival Munich, Britney X Festival Cologne, Whole Festival, Lollapalooza DE, Berlin Club Commission.
