The Hauntologist

An absurdist desktop docufiction psychodrama about a loner who inherits a vast country estate only to find that it’s haunted by the ghosts of revolutionaries, despots and visionaries. “The Hauntologist” is a timely story about untimeliness – looking at the fragmentation of chronology and memory in our public emotional existence – and how our memories and feelings are increasingly mediated.

Short Films

The Hour of Death

Slovenia 2024, 19:09 min, D.: Tomaž Gorkič

Based on an iconic Yugoslavian graphic novel by Kostja Gatnik alias Magna Purga from 1977 the story follows the life of Urban, a man trapped in monotonous daily patterns from birth to death. Years pass relentlessly as Urban grows up and ages, with tireless repetitions persistently dominating his dreary, yet mysterious life like a working machine. However, just before his death, a glimmer of the meaning of life dawns upon Urban.

Lick Fire

Argentina 2023, 6:22 min, D.: Jeff Zorrilla

Through intimate reflections, Lick Fire delves into the ecstasy and turmoil that spring forth from the limitless realm of imagination, while fearlessly contemplating the impending consequences of artificial intelligence in breathing life into these captivating and unreal realms.

Liminal Space: Ins Innere eintauchen

Germany 2022, 22:22 min, D.: Anahita Safarnejad Choobary

A poetic exploration of a father-daughter relationship. Anahita grows up in front of her father's camera. A dreamy life fulfilled with love and poetry evolves into a nightmare in which she witnesses her identity get lost as her father dies of cancer. In her quest to understand death, she dives into a rollercoaster ride of unknown emotions and embarks on a voyage of acceptance. From death into an immortal world.

Under Berlin Film Festival

The long-anticipated second edition of the Under Berlin Film Festival, Berlin’s international festival of unconventional, experimental, and avant-garde cinema, will be hosted for the first time at Lichtblick-Kino!

Focusing on the diffusion of innovative cinematographies, its eclectic program includes feature films, short fiction, animation, and documentary films from across the globe, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Romania, the Philippines, Slovenia, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Finland, Norway, and the USA. All films will be screened in their original language with English subtitles.

This edition will feature 38 films, including the World Premiere of the Dutch film Tori: Book 1 by Roy Rezaäli, who will also be present for a Q&A following the screening.

New to this year’s festival are three exciting sections:
Under the Light, with a special focus on Argentine Cinema, Non Humans, dedicated to exploring new technologies in audiovisuals, particularly AI, and Underline, a parallel section showcasing experimental short films inspired by literature, which will be continuously screened from 4 to 9 November at Andenbuch KulturRaum (Tempelhof-Kreuzberg).

UBFF is part of the UNDER Transterritorial Film Network, which is celebrating its 20th edition this year. The primary aim of this networked festival is to showcase films that take risks—whether in terms of production, subject matter, or aesthetics—that often leave them on the margins of traditional exhibition circuits.

Direction and General Production: Peri Azar / 8A-110 Collective
Programming: Marcelo Páez / Peri Azar
